Tokusa Japanese Tableware – Timeless Stripes Inspired by Tradition
Step into the world of Tokusa (十草), one of Japan’s most cherished wagara (和柄) patterns. Wagara combines “wa” (和), meaning the spirit of Japan, with “gara” (柄), meaning patterns—motifs that have adorned everyday Japanese life for centuries.

The Tokusa design takes its inspiration from the horsetail plant (木賊, tokusa), its slender stems reimagined as delicate, hand-painted lines radiating from the centre of each piece. This simple yet captivating composition evokes a sense of calm and refinement, making it a firm favourite in Japanese tableware.
Historically, tokusa leaves were used to polish gold, believed to enhance its brilliance. This connection imbues the design with a sense of prosperity and good fortune, qualities still appreciated today.
Crafted by skilled artisans, each plate or bowl showcases the finest Japanese craftsmanship, with perfectly balanced stripes, rich indigo and earthy glazes, and a finish that feels as beautiful in the hand as it looks on the table.
